Twelve million people ride the subway and commuter trains each day in the United States, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). And many if not most of these riders board this country's vast rail system without having to go thru a security checkpoint or having to be screened in any fashion, in sharp contrast to the security in place at all of the country's airports. In the wake, however, of the high profile mass murders perpetrated in the subways of London, Madrid and Tokoyo in recent years, subway security, or the lack thereof, has come into sharp focus in the U.S.
